The box is open. Is this a joint kit or a termination kit?
Look for the ferrule. A joint kit carries an inline connection ferrule and a wraparound joint case: two ends becoming one run again. A termination kit carries terminal lugs and rain sheds: one end made off at a bushing or out to air. No kit carries both sets, so the manifest tells you before the label does. Every part, named.
What does a code like GXS-24 encode?
Series, class, band. GXS fixes it as a three-core extruded-dielectric straight-through joint, and the two digits are decoded row by row on the size chart. The useful half of this question is the other half. A code carries no trace of who made the cable, how its screen is built, whether it is armoured, or which standard your contract cites. Two cables with the same code can be different cables. So a code is a reply to an enquiry, never a substitute for one, and a schedule that lists only codes cannot be checked by anybody downstream.
Why can one kit not span two voltage classes when the conductor is the same size?
Take 50 sq mm, three-core XLPE. At 12 kV it is GXS-11, off the 16–50 band. At 15–24 kV, GXS-21, off 25–50. At 36 kV, GXS-31, off 35–70. One conductor, three codes. Area fixes the ferrule and the sleeve; the class fixes insulation thickness, stress control and piece counts. The GXS manifest carries three red insulation tubes at 12 kV and six at 24 and 36 kV. A kit one class down is short before the first cut.
Can I make a joint up from two manufacturers' parts?
Physically, yes. What you lose is the qualification. The type test runs as one ordered sequence on an assembled joint: withstand, partial discharge to ≤ 5 pC, an impact test written for straight-through joints, 63 heating cycles in water, impulse at 95, 125 or 170 kV, then the electrical set again. Insulation resistance is taken before that impact test and again after it, so the chart is following one specimen through, not testing parts. What passed is the assembly, not each item in it. Swap the stress control tube or the ferrule and no report on file describes what you built. The same logic reaches the crew: the manufacturer trains jointers on its own kits and certifies them on a practical test, and a half-made joint fails in six known ways.
What does a CPRI or ERDA report actually cover?
A named sample, on a date, against one test. The CPRI certificate on this manufacturer's record is dated August 2012 and names heat-shrink joints and terminations at 33 kV. MSEDCL's approvals came later: first at 11 kV in 2015, then across the 11–33 kV band the year after. The ERDA report on the record is against the busbar sleeve, a different line — do not carry it into a joint schedule. The UL files are no better here: E328538 is heat-shrink tube, E335936 the Busboot shroud. ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certify management systems, not a splice. Ask for the report that names your kit code. What the type tests prove.
Is there an HD jointing kit?
Not in this range. No ordering chart uses those letters and no kit is graded that way. The only HD in the jointing paperwork is CENELEC HD 629.1, named in the guaranteed technical particulars beside IEC 60502-4. HD there is CENELEC's document class, a Harmonisation Document, not a duty rating. Asked for an HD jointing kit, find out which of the two the writer meant.
What compound type is in the kit?
There is none. Nothing is poured, mixed or left to go off. Sealing is mastic and adhesive linings that soften as each part recovers. The GTJ/2436 manifest lists stress relief mastic, six pieces, and a high-permittivity void filler. GPS/2436 lists stress control mastic, an adhesive-lined side sleeve and an earthing plumb. Can I get a size that is not on the chart?
Ask, but quote the manufacturer's own wording. The cable repair sleeve sheet says custom dimensions available on request. The termination pages say special tail lengths available on request, and solderless and special purpose earthing kits also available on request. That is the whole published position on specials. No joint sheet prints an equivalent line, so a non-standard joint is a question in writing, not an item off a chart.
What name goes on the requisition?
Two halves, both printed, both needed. The series head as the sheet writes it — GXS/1236, GXSS/1236, GPS/2436, GTJ/1112 — then the kit code inside it, GXS-24. The series alone cannot be ordered; the code alone repeats across sheets. Whether the requisition says joint kit, jointing kit or splice kit changes nothing. Spend the care on the pair of codes. How many kits for one three-core joint?
One. Every joint sheet ends with the same note about full contents for a single straight-through joint, and the three-core manifests are built that way: GXS lists three inline connection ferrules, one wraparound joint case, one earth braid. Single-core runs the other way. Three-phase in single-core needs three GXSS kits at three positions, and no sheet publishes how far apart to stagger them. How an MV joint goes together.

Kit Sheet sells nothing and holds nothing; it reads the charts. Get all four from the manufacturer against a code and a quantity, in writing.

Ask for the paperwork by kit code

Half the answers above end in a document somebody should be holding. The type-test report against the code you are buying. The certificate, with its date and the voltage it names. The installation instruction sheet, which every kit is listed as carrying and which overrides anything written here. Request all three by code, in writing, before the kit ships rather than after the joint is buried.
