Cable joint kit size chart

Conductor size in, kit code out. Five ordering charts off the manufacturer's Issue 2 catalogue, September 2018, including the two places it contradicts the web pages.

The LV chart has six rows on paper and five on the web

The manufacturer's GXLT/GPLT page stops at GXLT-5 and GXLT-15 and writes the top band as 4x185–400 sq mm. The catalogue prints six rows, and splits that band in two: 4x185–240 takes GXLT-5 or GXLT-15, and 4x300–400 takes GXLT-6 or GXLT-16. The chart below follows the catalogue. If your LV joint is 300 or 400 sq mm, get the code confirmed in writing before anybody cuts.

Classes are printed as 12 kV (6.6/6.6 kV, 6.35/11 kV), 15–24 kV (8.7/15 kV, 11/11 kV, 12.7/22 kV) and 36 kV (19/33 kV). Watch 120 sq mm in the 12 kV column: it is the top of GXS-12 and the bottom of GXS-13. Both are published fits. Manifest on the GXS page.

Two datasheets set side by side. GPS/1112 covers 11 kV PILC to Umax 12 kV in a single column. GPS/2436 covers screened PILC at 24 kV and 36 kV. The catalogue prints the last 36 kV band as "400—": trailing dash, no upper figure. The GPS/2436 product page caps the series at 400 sq mm. Treat 400 as the ceiling until somebody says otherwise.

GTJ/1112 prints its sizes with the 3x prefix; GTJ/2436 prints bare sq mm for the same three-core job. The 12 kV column jumps from GTJ-15 straight to GTJ-17, and GTJ-16 appears on no page of the catalogue. Manifest on the GTJ page.

What the two digits actually mean

Take GXS-23 apart. The letters are the series, and the series is fixed by what the cable is — GXS is three-core extruded dielectric. The first digit is the voltage class: 1 for 12 kV, 2 for 15–24 kV, 3 for 36 kV. The second digit is the size band, counted up from the smallest. GXS-23 is therefore the third band of the 15–24 kV chart, 120–150 sq mm.

GXSS, GPS/2436 and GTJ/2436 all run on that scheme. GXLT does not. Its 1.1 kV kits are GXLT-1 to GXLT-6, and the 3.3 kV kits are the same six bands with ten added on. GPS/1112 sits on its own sheet with one column, so its leading 1 carries no class meaning at all. Do not read a code from a series you have not opened.

The omissions matter more than the scheme. No digit tells you armoured or unarmoured. None tells you aluminium conductor or copper, though the GPS ferrule is supplied Cu or Al. None tells you the mechanical design. Wraparound joint case, or the galvanised mesh listed as its alternative — same code either way. And none tells you core count. That is the whole distance between GXS and GXSS: one size range, almost one name.

When the conductor size is not on the chart

The bands are ranges, not a rounding rule, and they do not join up. Read the 12 kV GXS column downwards: 16–50, 70–120, 120–185, 240–300, 400–500. A 60, a 220 and a 630 sq mm cable all land in white space between two rows. GXSS leaves the same holes at 121–149 and 301–399.

There is nothing published to fill them with. Every chart here is keyed on conductor cross-section and nothing else. The joints and terminations catalogue prints no cable diameter range for these kits. No joint length either, and no finished outside diameter. The only lengths in the whole document are termination tail figures, and they belong to a different product. So the sq mm figure is the entire published input. A size nobody printed is a size you ask about, not one you round into.

Three hundred sq mm shows the trap from the other side. It lands on a published band in all five series, fourteen codes in total. At 12 kV three-core it is the top of GXS-14. Put the same cable on a 15–24 kV system and it drops to the bottom of GXS-25. At 36 kV it is the top of GXS-33. Single core, it is GXSS-13, GXSS-23 or GXSS-33. On paper cable: GPS-14 at 11 kV, GPS-24 at 24 kV, GPS-33 at 36 kV. GTJ adds three more. At 1.1 or 3.3 kV it is the last GXLT row, GXLT-6 or GXLT-16. One conductor size, fourteen codes, and the system voltage chooses between them.

Splicing kit, jointing kit, joint kit

Two trades, three words, one shelf. The manufacturer's GXLT/GPLT page carries "cable splicing kit" in its title. The GXS page carries "cable joint kit". Both land on the charts above. The band does not move with the vocabulary. Whichever word got you here, sq mm still picks the code. System voltage still picks the column. Four things these charts do not give you

Cable diameter limits. Not printed against any band, in any series. Joint length or finished OD. Not in the catalogue for any joint kit. The GXLTS submersible series. Named on the manufacturer's site, with no kit codes and no ordering chart anywhere we hold. Price, lead time, shelf life and stock. Kit Sheet has no source for those and will not invent one. All four come back from the manufacturer in one email if you send the cable details with the question.

A code picks the kit. It does not tell you what is in it.

Quantities move inside a single series. Red insulating tubing and mastic both step up with the voltage class, not the letters. Check the manifest before the van leaves, not on the tailgate. Kit Sheet is a reference — it holds nothing, quotes nothing and takes no orders.
